Stride vs. TrainingPeaks

TrainingPeaks is the language of endurance coaching. The Performance Management Chart, TSS, the 70,000-plan marketplace, adoption by national federations — it earned its place as the incumbent. But at its core it is a dashboard plus a workspace for a human coach: it shows you the data, beautifully, and then waits for a person to decide what to do. Stride is the AI Planner. It generates the plan, adapts it to your recovery on its own, and writes the next session straight to your devices — no manual building required.

In short

TrainingPeaks is the best home for a human coach and the PMC. Stride is for athletes who want the planning itself automated — the Stride AI Planner builds the plan, reacts to recovery, and pushes workouts to your devices.

A dashboard for decisions, or an AI that makes them#

The PMC is rightly the industry standard — fitness, fatigue and form in one chart. But it is a read-out. It tells you that you're deep in the red; it doesn't move tomorrow's session. That decision is yours, or your coach's. Independent reviewers put it plainly: TrainingPeaks adjusts nothing on its own — it's a dashboard, not a decision-maker.

Stride closes that loop. AI Insights fire automatically after sessions and on a weekly and monthly schedule, each grounded in your real training, load and recovery, with a triage status. When you're overreached, Stride makes the smallest useful change to the upcoming plan — protecting the sessions you've committed to — and writes it to your calendar and devices while you sleep.

Buy a plan, hire a coach… or automate it#

On TrainingPeaks you get structure by buying a pre-built plan from the marketplace or paying a human coach to assign workouts. Both are good options — and both put the thinking on a person. Stride generates an individualised plan from your fitness, history, goals and constraints, and gives you a natural-language AI Planner: tell it "I'm wrecked this week, lighten it" or "add a 20-minute test Thursday" and it actually changes your plan, updates your thresholds and logs your races.

Recovery it can see but won't act on#

TrainingPeaks added Oura in 2026 and syncs WHOOP HRV and sleep into a Health dashboard — useful context, but it sits there for you to interpret. Stride treats recovery as an input to the plan: it pulls readiness, HRV, resting heart rate and full sleep staging from Whoop and Oura (and Garmin), and when recovery craters it automatically eases the week rather than leaving you to notice.

The analysis tier — and what needs WKO5#

Credit where due: TrainingPeaks Premium is analytically strong — Normalized Power, Intensity Factor, Variability Index, Efficiency Factor and aerobic decoupling are all there. But per-second W′ balance — watching your anaerobic battery deplete and recharge through a ride — isn't in Premium; for that depth you buy WKO5, a separate $169 desktop app. Stride includes W′ balance over time, automatic interval and sprint detection, and weather-aware power analysis in the same subscription, no second tool required.

Where TrainingPeaks wins#

If you have — or are — a human coach, TrainingPeaks is still the hub. Its coach tools, the enormous plan marketplace, federation-level trust, TrainingPeaks Virtual and the most reliable workout-push pipeline in the sport are hard to match, and the PMC remains the shared language coaches think in. Stride works alongside coaches; for self-coached athletes, it brings that planning intelligence built in and automatic.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stride a good TrainingPeaks alternative?
Yes, for athletes who want the planning automated. TrainingPeaks excels as a dashboard and a workspace for a human coach. The Stride AI Planner generates and adapts your plan itself, acts on your recovery, and writes workouts to your devices, so you don't need to build sessions or interpret charts manually.
Does Stride have a Performance Management Chart (CTL/ATL/TSB)?
Stride tracks chronic training load and uses it directly — both to inform analysis and to drive automatic, recovery-aware replanning. The difference is that Stride acts on the trend rather than only charting it.
Can I keep working with a human coach?
Yes. Coaches can use Stride too — it generates a squad-wide digest summarising every athlete's status and exactly who needs attention. Stride complements human coaching rather than forbidding it.
Do I need WKO5 for advanced analysis with Stride?
No. Per-second W′ balance, automatic interval and sprint detection, Normalized Power, Intensity Factor, Variability Index, Efficiency Factor and aerobic decoupling are included in Stride. On TrainingPeaks, the deepest models like dFRC require WKO5, a separate $169 purchase.
How does pricing compare?
TrainingPeaks Premium is $19.95/month or $134.99/year, with WKO5 a further $169 and coach plans from $21.99/month. Stride bundles deep analysis and automatic AI planning into one subscription with a free trial.
